Andrés Montaño joins TrebezIA as CTO

Bilbao, January 1, 2026. — TrebezIA welcomes Andrés Montaño as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) from January 1, 2026. Montaño is not an external hire: during his time as a senior researcher at Tecnalia he was deeply involved in the development of the technology that today forms the core of TrebezIA's solution. His joining the founding team means bringing on board someone who knows the system from the inside, has been part of the journey from the very beginning, and brings a long-track technical vision in industrial robotics.

A technical profile built over two decades

Andrés Montaño holds a PhD in Automation, Robotics, and Vision from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where he defended his doctoral thesis on object manipulation based on tactile information after four years on a competitive FPI fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science. His research career includes a research stay at the Sugano Lab at Waseda University in Tokyo, one of the world's leading references in humanoid robotics and manipulation.

Prior to joining TrebezIA, Montaño was a senior researcher at Tecnalia for four years, where he led R&D projects in robotics for flexible industrial environments: algorithm design for planning, perception, and control of commercial robots, technical management of European research consortia, and technology transfer to industry. It is precisely during that period that his work intersects directly with the origins of the technology now powering Mairon.

His earlier career also includes ten years as a researcher in the IOC group at UPC, specializing in dexterous manipulation with tactile information, and early experience as co-founder of a software and electronics company in Colombia — adding an entrepreneurial dimension to his profile that fits naturally with TrebezIA's current stage.

Key areas of expertise include:

Advanced robotic manipulation: motion planning, dexterous manipulation, tactile and force-sensor-based control.

Perception and vision: 3D perception algorithms, pose estimation, sensor integration in complex robotic systems.

Mobile and industrial robotics: UR, Stäubli, and Tiago platforms; ROS integration and flexible manufacturing environments.

Applied R&D: more than ten peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals and conferences.

The right addition for the scaling phase

TrebezIA is at a pivotal moment: its prototype has been validated, its capabilities demonstrated in public settings and before specialist audiences, and the company now faces the product development and early commercialization phase. Having as CTO someone with Montaño's technical depth — and who also knows the system's history and architecture from its Tecnalia origins — is an asset that is hard to overstate at this stage.

"Having someone who knows the technology inside out and has been part of the journey from the beginning is a huge asset as we continue to grow and scale."

TrebezIA's founding team is now formed by Jon Oñativia as CEO and Andrés Montaño as CTO: two complementary profiles with shared roots at Tecnalia and a common vision for the future of autonomous robotics in intralogistics.
